WHAT HAPPENS AT A WORKSHOP

Good question! We cover all the juicy decorating details like, where to find inspiration with your decorating project, what you can’t ignore when starting a project, how to keep your confidence up when you’re in the middle of a reno, the importance of lighting your home correctly and SO much more. We have plenty of question and answer time so you can bring photos of your home or plans for your renovations and we can work through any areas one-on-one that are troubling you. Plus there are snacks and treats too! It’s a fun morning of decorating and you’ll walk away with a head full of ideas to implement as soon as you get home.

MEET EMMA BLOMFIELD

I’m Emma, co-founder of The Decorating School, stylist, decorator and homewares buyer. That’s a lot of hats to wear, but I’ve been interior design obsessed pretty much my whole life so it’s no surprise to anyone that knows me that I’m this immersed in the design world.

I studied Business at University and majored in marketing, I also have an Advanced Diploma in events management. After finishing uni in the middle of the GFC marketing jobs were scarce so I kept working as a nanny and in retail with Oroton to pay the bills. I learnt all I could at Oroton about visual merchandising – my love of arranging pretty things in store lead to looking for jobs in interior design and was lucky enough to score a job as an Online Stylist for a high end interiors firm on Sydney’s North Shore. That job saw me assisting with interior design jobs and also selecting products for the online store where we sold boutique furniture and homewares. From there I wanted to expand my styling skills and started working for one of Sydney’s largest Property Styling companies. We were styling up to four homes a day – that’s four truck loads of furniture to be placed and styled in 8 hours. Yep, we were busy bees!

While I was working in my first job, many of my friends were moving out of home or buying their first property and coming to me for advice about how to decorate their homes. It kept happening and before I knew it, I’d created a website and figured if there was enough demand in a capital city, surely those in remote or rural areas of Australia (or even busy professionals in metro areas) would be in need of an interior decorating service too so I launched my e-decorating service. This has ‘virtually’ taken me across the country decorating all sorts of homes from sheep and cattle stations, inner city apartments, family homes in leafy suburbs and even a few retail stores and commercial offices. I also host workshops in small country towns up and down the East Coast, teaching homeowners the principles of decorating. I always leave feeling so overwhelmed with positive vibes and have managed to make a number of new friends from these workshops.

In 2013 I met fellow interior nerd Sonya Pala of EcoLuxe while I was hosting a shopping tour of Sydney’s Northern Beaches. Sonya sat next to me on the tour bus and we got chatting about workshops I was hosting in rural towns and our shared love of interiors. Many coffee meetings later we’d dreamed up an online school teaching homeowners the principles of decorating and how to realistically achieve a beautifully decorated home. We got to work and in September 2015, launched The Decorating School. You can read more about that over here.

I strive to make my life as beautiful as it can be so when I’m not working I’m flower arranging, playing with my puppy dog Alfie, eating way too much chocolate, buying more stationery than I need, and hoarding candles and coffee table books. I also enjoy escaping to my parents property in the Hunter Valley when I can, to spend time with my four donkeys – Alice, Hazel, Will and Toby. Check out my instagram for pics of my fluffy friends.

I’m an ideas person who likes to suggest rather than do. I certainly don’t tell people I know their home better than they do. I wanted to create a more relaxed and casual service than hiring a decorator who does everything with little personalisation for the client.
